What Are Industrial Cooling Towers?

Industrial cooling towers remove excess heat from process water and discharge it into the atmosphere. Depending on their operation, cooling towers are categorized by air and water flow: crossflow, counterflow, and hyperbolic.

Cooling towers function as heat exchangers — allowing air and water to interact directly, cooling the water through partial evaporation before re-entering the system.

The Different Types of Cooling Towers

Crossflow Cooling Towers

Use splash fills that allow horizontal air movement across descending water. Easier to maintain but more prone to frost.

Reverse Flow (Counterflow) Cooling Towers

Air moves vertically upward against the downward water flow. More compact but requires more pumping power.

Based on Fan Position

Includes Induced Draft and Forced Draft cooling towers depending on fan placement and airflow direction.

Based on Installation Type

Factory-assembled and Field-erected cooling towers to suit varying operational needs.

How Does an Industrial Cooling Tower Work?

Cooling towers are recirculating systems that remove heat from industrial processes and building air conditioning units.

The system consists of three main components — cooling tower, recirculating pump, and heat exchanger. Warm water passes through the heat exchanger, rises to the tower top, and cools as air passes over it, causing evaporation. The cooled water is then recirculated to repeat the cycle.

What is the Role of Louvers in a Cooling Tower?

Air inlet louvers block sunlight from entering the cooling tower basin, helping control algae growth and reducing chemical use. They also minimize splash-out, conserving water and maintaining tower efficiency.

If louvers become scaled, they restrict airflow and reduce performance — emphasizing the need for regular maintenance and descaling.
